The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
