Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
