RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
