Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
